Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max given five-star ANCAP safety rating

Updated Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max large SUV has been given a maximum five-star safety rating by Australasian new car assessment program (ANCAP).
The three-row SUV was tested against the latest ANCAP 2023-2025 protocols, alongside the 2024 GWM Tank 500 in the latest round of evaluations.
While the Tank 500 was subjected to the full suite of safety tests, the Tiggo 8 Pro Max's rating was largely based on its already-tested, closely-related, Tiggo 7 Pro's result from 2023.
However, some supplementary pedestrian protection tests were carried out on the Tiggo 8 - along with an assessment of additional technical information provided by Chery - to help the crash-test authority evaluate any potential differences.
In 2023, the Tiggo 7 Pro received scores of 88% for Adult Occupant Protection, 87% for Child Occupant Protection, 72% for Vulnerable Road User Protection, and 86% for Safety Assist crash-avoidance technology.
The safety authority did note, however, that the third row does not feature any top tether anchors and therefore children who require a child car seat cannot use it.
Vulnerable Road User Protection score - which assesses how well the vehicle protects pedestrians and cyclists in a crash, and if it can prevent collisions with them, as well as motorcyclists - was just 2 percentage points above the minimum required for five stars (70%).
Where the model redeemed itself, however, was by gaining points for door and window opening functionality when submerged in water, as uninterrupted operation of windows or the provision of a 'break glass' safety device is eligible for scoring under the 2023-2025 protocols.
The Tiggo 7 Pro was the first model tested by ANCAP in 2023 to offer a safety escape hammer to assist with window exit.
"Chery's latest offering adds to its current five-star SUV line-up, with safer options for buyers," said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Carla Hoorweg.
