Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, underscored the strategic importance of developing an electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem for both economic growth and environmental sustainability.
To this end, Hartarto reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting the growth of the EV industry in Indonesia.
"Over time, there will be more EV products available, and prices will become more competitive. This is crucial for reducing carbon emissions, in line with the Indonesian government's commitments," remarked Hartarto at the Gaikindo Jakarta Auto Week (GJAW) 2024 in Tangerang on, 1st December.
The event, held from 22nd November to 1st December 2024, served as a platform for vehicle manufacturers to showcase their flagship products. It featured participation from 27 passenger car brands and 12 motorcycle brands, including new entrants Zeekr and Aletra, both making their debut in the Indonesian market.
Hartarto commended the contributions of local brands to the EV sector during the event. In particular, he highlighted the Aletra L8 electric car as a prime example of a competitive Indonesian product that excels in both quality and affordability.
"If the price is affordable, it will likely appeal to the public. Additionally, this car is an Indonesian brand, which is significant. Therefore, we will continue to promote Indonesian brands with local content to compete effectively in the market," he stated.
The minister also reaffirmed the government's support for the automotive industry, particularly the EV sector, through various initiatives, including incentives for luxury goods value-added tax on EVs.
He emphasised that innovation from industry players is vital for the development of a robust EV ecosystem.
Concluding his remarks, Hartarto expressed optimism regarding the future of Indonesia's electric automotive industry. "The automotive industry is consumer-driven, but this exhibition demonstrates that many products are competitively priced. Hence, I remain optimistic."
GJAW 2024 has emerged as a significant driver for the national automotive industry's growth, particularly in expediting the transition to environmentally friendly vehicles.
With strategic policies and close collaboration between the government and industry stakeholders, the shift towards EVs is expected to not only accelerate carbon emission reductions but also support inclusive and sustainable economic growth, contributing to the realisation of the vision for Golden Indonesia 2045.
