The Islamabad Excise and Taxation Department has recently announced plans to implement a vehicle registration system modelled after that of the United States.
Reportedly, the Punjab province is also preparing to adopt similar changes, with new regulations being introduced concerning vehicle registration and the issuance of number plates.
According to official sources, the Excise Department has decided that number plates will now be issued directly in the name of the vehicle owner.
Plates registered under the vehicle itself will no longer be permitted.
The department has stated that vehicle registration will be linked to the identity of the owner, which is expected to enhance security and facilitate the identification of vehicle owners.
Under the current system, number plates are associated with the vehicle. However, under the revised system, the number plate will be registered to the owner's name.
Upon the sale of a vehicle, the existing number plate must be removed and retained by the original owner, while the new buyer will be required to obtain a new number plate or apply for a personalised one.
