Despite the global slowdown in demand for electrified vehicles, Mercedes-Benz has expanded its plug-in hybrid offerings, with Malaysia emerging as a key market for the latest GLE400e launch.
Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) continues to emphasise its commitment to this segment, describing it as providing customers with "the luxury of choice."
During the launch press conference, the company's Marketing and Sales Vice President, Nadia Trimmel, stated that buyer preferences evolve over time and that the introduction of the GLE400e enables MBM to assess demand for electrified vehicles in the large SUV segment.
She further added: "There is potential for this product. Plug-in hybrids will remain part of the transition to full electrification, and MBM remains committed to this strategy in the long term, where market conditions allow."
The company is also introducing additional mild hybrid models in the lower part of the segment, in response to limited PHEV demand, as pure petrol Mercedes-Benz vehicles are being phased out globally.
In recent months, MBM has launched the C200 AMG Line and, alongside the GLE400e, the GLC200 AMG Line, as part of efforts to boost sales of its compact executive vehicles.
According to MBM President and CEO Amanda Zhang, this approach forms part of Stuttgart's broader strategy to diversify its lineup amid slowing EV demand, with over 40 models scheduled for launch over the next three years. "This is why both EV and internal combustion engine platforms are maintained, providing customers with a choice between ICE, plug-ins, and EVs. This is what is termed the 'luxury of choice.'"
With the launch of the GLE400e, MBM now offers six CKD locally assembled PHEVs, including the C350e, E350e, S580e and GLC350e in standard and Coupe forms.
By contrast, arch-rival BMW has largely withdrawn from the PHEV market, now offering only the X5 xDrive50e and the 750e, while discounting its imported M models.
