Price, specifications announced for updated MG 5
drive.com.au, 17 Jun '25
Pricing for the 2025 MG 5 sedan has been confirmed, following safety updates made in response to the previous model receiving a zero-star rating in earlier crash testing.
The MG 5 line-up has been reduced to a single variant: the 1.5-litre turbocharged Essence. The entry-level non-turbo Vibe grade has been discontinued.
It is priced from AUD 31,990 (US$ 20,800) before on-road costs, or AUD 32,990 drive-away under a current nationwide offer. This is an increase of AUD 3,000 compared to the previous Essence variant, and AUD 7,000 more than the discontinued Vibe version.
The Model Year 2024 (MY24) MG 5 Vibe has recently been offered at AUD 24,990 drive-away - AUD 8,000 less than the 2025 Essence - while the outgoing Essence is currently listed at AUD 29,990, which is AUD 3,000 below the 2025 price. These offers are valid until 30 June 2025, unless extended.
Following recent changes, the MG 5 now carries a three-star ANCAP safety rating, an improvement over the zero-star rating assigned to the previous model during 2023 testing.
Changes include seatbelt pre-tensioners for both front and outboard rear seats, whereas the previous top-spec model included them only for the front. Other updates consist of seatbelt reminders, 'whiplash restraint' seats in the front and rear, lane-keep assist, and revisions to the autonomous emergency braking system.
According to ANCAP, the three-star rating applies to vehicles manufactured from November 2024, although sales began in June 2025.
"Despite the MG 5's enhancements, several safety limitations remain in contrast to competitor models. Notably, a centre airbag - to mitigate occupant-to-occupant and occupant-to-vehicle interaction during side impacts - remains unavailable," ANCAP stated in a media release.
For 2025, the MG 5 Essence includes adaptive cruise control. All other specifications are unchanged.
Compared to the discontinued Vibe, the Essence variant is equipped with a 119 kW/250 Nm turbocharged 1.5-litre engine, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Additional equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, a higher speaker count, a 360-degree camera, paddle shifters, and a powered driver's seat.
The 2025 MG 5 Essence is currently on sale.
