UP government to develop Rs. 7 billion EV manufacturing hub in Kanpur
Economic Times, 17 Jun '25
The Uttar Pradesh Government on 16th June, 2025 announced plans to develop Kanpur as an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing hub, with a proposed investment of Rs. 7 billion (US$ 84.1 million) under the Kanpur Metropolitan Development Vision - 2030, according to a report by media sources.
The Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) will develop an EV park across 500 acres near Bhimsen, located along the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC). The project will be implemented under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the Government stated in an official release.
"The initiative aims to develop Kanpur's role in India's EV sector by supporting the local supply chain and domestic manufacturing," the statement added.
Project scope
The proposed park will include manufacturing units for electric motors, chassis, steel components, and lithium-ion cells. It will also include facilities for assembling batteries, chargers, controllers, and other electronic components used in EV production.
A research and development (R&D) centre will be part of the project, with a focus on EV-related technologies. The centre is expected to support both local and international technical developments.
The state also plans to establish an EV components cluster within the park. This cluster is intended to allow small and medium enterprises (SMEs), start-ups, and local businesses to be involved in EV manufacturing.
Officials noted that the park's location near the DFC may assist with logistics, offering connectivity for the transport of raw materials and finished goods via rail and road networks.
The Government expects the project to lead to job creation, support business activity, and contribute to the state's economic output.
